Your 2027 COLA: a 5-step checklist

Turn the 3.6% headline into a number you can budget with.

Step 1: Find your notice

SSA says the my Social Security notice appears online in late November. To see it online, create an account by Nov. 18, 2026. Otherwise it is mailed in December.

Step 2: Know the timing

SSI payments rise starting Dec. 31, 2026. Social Security increases are first payable in January 2027.

Step 3: Subtract deductions

Start with the gross raise, then take out Medicare premiums, any tax withholding and other deductions to see what lands in your account.

Step 4: Rebuild your budget

Plan from the net amount. If your rent, insurance or healthcare costs rise faster than 3.6%, the raise will not cover them.

Step 5: Review Medicare by Dec. 7

Medicare open enrollment runs through Dec. 7. Compare drug and Medicare Advantage plan costs before they can offset your raise.
