HSA limits for 2027, in plain English

What the IRS set for next year, and who can use an HSA.

The 2027 numbers

$4,500 for self-only coverage. $9,000 for family coverage. Source: IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-24.

Age 55 or older?

Add a $1,000 catch-up. If both spouses qualify, each catch-up goes into that person's own HSA.

You need a qualifying plan

2027 HDHP minimum deductible: $1,750 self-only, $3,500 family. Out-of-pocket maximum: $8,700 or $17,400.

Employer money counts

Example: $4,500 cap minus a $1,000 employer deposit leaves $3,500 for you to add.

New since 2026

Bronze and catastrophic Exchange plans are now treated as HDHPs (IRS Notice 2026-5). Check your plan's label.

Watch Medicare timing

HSA contributions stop once Medicare starts. Part A can backdate up to six months, so plan ahead.
