Social Security gets a 3.6% raise in 2027

Announced by SSA on Oct. 14, 2026. About 76 million Americans are affected.

Where 3.6% comes from

The cost-of-living adjustment tracks the rise in the CPI-W from the third quarter of 2025 to the third quarter of 2026.

The average retiree: $2,095 to $2,170

That is SSA's estimate for all retired workers in January 2027, roughly $75 more a month. Yours will differ.

Do the math: benefit x 1.036

$1,500 becomes about $1,554 $2,000 becomes about $2,072 $3,000 becomes about $3,108 Gross, before deductions

Medicare can shrink the raise

The 2026 Part B premium is $202.90 a month (CMS). A 2027 projection of $209.50 is an estimate, not final. Most people pay Part B from their benefit.

Still working? The tax cap rises

Earnings taxed for Social Security go from $184,500 in 2026 to $192,300 in 2027.
